HIIT, FLEX AND STRETCH - Our quick guide to what it is, how it works, and what to expect during a class!

This class fuses HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training - with stretches to give you a balance of intense cardio workout and flexibility improving exercise.

First of all, if you're unfamiliar with HIIT... what's it all about?

HIIT workouts have been all the rage for a while, and are the go-to form of exercise for challenging and pushing your fitness to the limit. One reason they're so popular is because they allow you to cram a lot of hard work into a single session - so they're a hit (no pun intended... seriously!) with people leading busy lives who who want to squeeze the absolute maximum amount of gain out of their valuable exercise time.

What does it mean in practice? HIIT classes are characterised by extremely hard bouts of anerobic excercise interspersed with less intense periods of recovery. During those hard work intervals, you’ll be challenging yourself nearly to your max. You rest. Then rinse and repeat!

Because HIIT lends itself to fast, explosive movements you'll find yourself doing exercises like push-ups, squats and kettlebell swings. It's the polar opposite of steady, endurance exercise like long-distance running.

How does it work? Because it raises your heart rate significantly when you're pushing during those bursts of work intervals it's obviously good for improving your cardio fitness. But because your heart rate is elevated you'll burn more calories than you would with a lower-intensity excerise in the same amount of time, so it can really help you burn away the fat as well.

Our HIIT, Flex and Stretch classes differ from traditional full-on HIIT workouts, in that part of the session is devoted to full-body stretching exercises. This means that you get a more balanced all-in-one session by working on flexbility in addition to cardio fitness.
