Wondering what happens when you go to a gym?

Before arriving

Before you get there you should try to have plenty to drink and have a snack about 30 minutes before you arrive. Avoid having a heavy meal within 2-3 hours of going to the gym.

What should I wear?

A good, friendly gym will only be concerned that you are safe and comfortable; not that you are fashionable. Wear a good pair of supportive training shoes, comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily and ladies you should invest in a well-fitting sports bra - particularly if you enjoy the treadmill or aerobics. If you are concerned about sweating, wear dark clothing and avoid vests or singlets.

What should I bring?

A drink is a good idea though good gyms will have water fountains and may sell drinks. A small towel is also a good idea as this allows you to wipe down the equipment after you have used it.

What happens when I join a gym?

A good gym should be friendly and have positive approachable staff. You should be offered a full induction. The induction will normally take an hour and at the end you should have a good idea of how to structure a gym session and how to safely use the equipment. You will then be offered a programme. This should be personalised to your fitness level and your goals. A good gym will allow you to get your programme upgraded periodically. If you are not sure or require some assistance the staff should be available to help at any time.

How should I behave?

The simple answer is with courtesy to other gym users. Wipe down and put away equipment after you have used it, avoid resting on the machine between sets of exercises if the gym is busy. Avoid using your mobile phone or playing music through your headphones too loudly. Most gyms encourage a social side to gym membership and many a friendship or life partnership has begun in the gym.
