CORE, FLEX AND STRETCH - Our quick guide to what it is, how it works, and what to expect during a class!

Core, Flex and Stretch is a fitness class which uses resistance bands to increase your strength and increase your flexibility.

Firstly, what's a resistance band? It's an elasticated band providing resistance which your muscles have to work against as you go through a series of exercises. They come with different levels of resistance which work your muscles with different degrees of difficulty, meaning that the same workout can be made suitable for people of varied fitness levels.

So why use them? Many people assume that resistence bands are popular simply because they allow you to do strength training at home without the need for free weights or weight machines. If so, why do a fitness class with resistance bands when you're in a gym which is full of precisely this kind of equipment?

The answer is because a resistance band workout is a bit different. A key benefit of this form of exercise is that they've been found to benefit stabiliser muscles to a greater extent than traditional forms of weight training. Stabiliser muscles aren't involved in the direct weight-opposing movement itself, but instead work to keep you steady while those primary muscles are doing their job. In short, they distribute the workload more evenly throughout the body, rather than loading all the stress and strain onto one or two primary muscles.

So with our Core, Flex and Stretch class, as well as working those larger muscles to become more powerful, you'll increase your joint stability, flexibility, and in turn decrease your risk of injury.
